The best 90's "Eyes of The World" has always been 3-31-91 for me....but i have not put it into the ring for a battle with another 90's "Eyes" in a long time( the last fight this "Eyes" had was a fucking bloodbath against 3-29-90, narrowly escaping defeat).......i put it up against a contender that has been climbing the rankings for years today, and this epic Greensboro version just didnt have enough fight left. After an undefeated reign as Heavyweight champion 90's "Eyes" since that fateful night 17 years ago, we now have a new champion

Giants Stadium 6-17-91......just awesome in everyway, also top 5? show altogether of the 90's....this show is well known by all of you, but if you dont know it, before you tell me that they didnt play "Eyes" that night, take a peak at the first set opener.

HI DIANA!!!!!!

those are the three...no other version from the 90s is in the conversation...12-31-1990 is a notch below, nice version there...09-29-1994 has some nice moments as well...

While i agree that those three stand out as best, and the New Years one i had forgotten about but have always known it was big, it seems like you are putting 90's "Eyes" in a "Days Between" kind of category(great song, only 3 good versions, rest are crap)...there are a bunch of really good 90's "Eyes".

I meant conversation for the best eyes of the 90s...there are some nice versions from summer 90 out there...91 has a few, don't know of anything that stands out from '92 or '93...07-03-1994 is cool, 10-17-1994 is that long rambling version that people have over-rated...and finally 05-21-1995 might be the last time a nice eyes was delivered...

I know someone wrote it somewhere, but it's hidden quite well amongst reviews of 89-90 pre-Vince (Miss you, Brent)material, my favorite period was fall 89 up until Brent left us, in my opinion the hottest, tightest playing of the bands many different configurations/unique sounds that can differ so vastly. My question, will someone list in it's entirety, the shows that "without a net" came from. Thanks!

Concur with Tito. Both greenboro shows are awesome and that Eyes is money. The PITB that leads to a Dark Star tease aint too shabby either

The 6-17-91 i was at and had such a fun time......i went with a friend of mine from CT and he had only been to like one or two shows..before the first set opener he said "i think i hear "eyes" tuning". In typical Tito douchbaggery, i had to be Joe Deadhead and say something to the effect of "They dont open the show with "Eyes" ya rookie".......They Might as well have played one of the best 90s "BEW" that night,They might as well have teased Dark Star into a weak "Masterpiece" without the Garcia back-up vocals throughout. They might as well played an a little above average "Cassidy" and they might as well ended off a great first set.

Note*- Why does everyone get all excited about a "Dark Star tease" after the fact? Its a complete and utter ripoff and dissappointment, totally uncool, especially if your high on LSD. Is there anything that is a "tease" thats awesome?(maybe sports gambling)

I don't think it's the "tease" necessarily, at least for me. I think it's more of the first set placement. Very rare. It made me think the boys were winging it and getting creative. 2 months later in shoreline those folks actually got a first set DS. Not epic but if you were there it must have been a hell of a night.

I was there, was at every Shoreline show from 89 on.....while i obviously remember the Dark Star, the show didnt really stand out......For me, Shoreline was almost always average for some reason. You better not be on the lawn at shoreline, because the sound sucked, and you were on a hill. There was only about a 20 foot difference between the First row of the Lawn and last row of the seats, but the difference in sound was huge...im a Cal Expo guy. My favorite Venue (killer Orange Slushies)

Note*- There was one Epic night at Shoreline that had Eyes, Fire, and Terrapin.Three huge GD anthems, all pre-drums(with Box and Sampson too).alot of people claim upon further review that the setlist name carries way more weight than its game, but i disagree, that was one of the best shows have seen

I agree on cal expo. Great place. i too was at many shoreline shows and had the horrible displeasure of being on top of the hill for 7/2/94. The unexpected Music>sugaree>music opener was tough to hear. as for 7/3, The Eyes>fire is very good. I just thought that first set was a big waste of time. Also, it was the first time since seeing the dead I could actually tell Garcia was using based on playing and vocals. I do love the 5Pm start times on Sunday though

Dude while I also love Cal Expo you gotta remember the super sensational run they put together in the summer of 90 at Shoreline not to mention the summer solstice shows in the summer of 89 and if that don't do it for ya check out the JGB show that's out on video after Brents death that was well, shite just listen or watch just those and if your not convinced that some of the best later era shows were played at Shoreline well ....
Anyway back on subject I've got to say that my vote for best 90's Eyes goes to that mammoth 23+ minute one they played in the Fall of 91. I think it was the Halloween Bill Graham Memorial show but if you want to check for sure it appears as an extra at the end of Dicks Picks 17. I do believe they hit their stride with this song once again in 91 where it seems to show up everywhere and very well played at that.

hey, has anyone checked out the gorgeous eyes 2nd set opener 6-10-90. The boys really take their time easing into this slinky-silky-smooth version. Check out the 1st st jack straw bertha. Phil's bass notes sound like a giant beachball bounding up and down stairs or layers by twos and threes. Very fun and energetic, reminds me of getting 3months worth of excercise in three hours being played by the band not unlike a Jerry-puppet!
Okay, all I could say after 10-30-91 was EYES!!!
Cosmic meltown occure 2-11-89. not sure if there was an eyes but check out estimated falling to pieces, absolutely chaotic beautiful and scary off the chain rail-whatever, Eye was there matey and damn glad I was. What are they in space wait wht? ok still estimated falling apart so awe inpiringly that it hurt, then oasis in cosmic weirdness cometh the lullaby from Brent. drink up it's only just begun,,..just one life now better damn well have fun. peace

Odd that you brought this up. I was just listening to 3/31/91. I too prefer this to 3/29/90. No Branford Marsalis means more Garcia jams/ Hornsby also adds some nice fills. The Playin' that follows contains some nice Dark Star teases near the end (a protent of what was to come the following night). I'll have to listen to the Eyes from 6/17/91 again to see how it measures up. I am curious to see what others think. If there is another 90s Eyes that tops these - I want to hear it!

Great video of that Eyes: (edited just to go along w/ Tito's point about posting...)

Just search on "Grateful Dead 6/17/91" in YouTube

I agree that it is an amazing performance. I don't do much 91 so I'll have to leave the ranking to others. This one is surely sweet in its own right, that's for sure.

Perhaps "stature" was what you meant?

Well, I figure there is no advertising going on, so it should be ok (other than the brief ID of the radio station simulcast).

Yep, this Eyes is absolutely stunning. Vince's work is quite good. Impressive.

And the only thing short about it is Bobby's daisy dukes.

SDH-
Yeah...i realize thats your way of calling me stupid, no matter how veiled the insult was. Im not stupid, nor do I think you are. I didnt know we were in the business of correcting people's grammar, spelling etc. If that is indeed the case, perhaps you meant to capitalize "Daisy Duke's"?

Damn, easy on the sensitivity Francis. I would put up the same response to anyone here...anyone. Just ask the folks here; I have made it my mission to rectify spelling and grammatical errors whenever I spot them in an effort to elevate the Forum as a whole, or to just show my own intelllectual superiority - take your pick. Not to call anyone stupid. Good God, I make enough mistakes myself, as Rob, Dire and Elbow et al are so gracious as to point out on a regular basis.
